FEEDING INTO
only contributes to its power.

What is a
negative
person?

A negative person has pessimistic thoughts that are prevalent in their mind. They think negatively about themselves. As such, they don’t see positive possibilities very often, and as a result, they drain positive energy from others. When we meet negative people, our instinct is to try and change them. We strive to get people that naturally think negatively to be more upbeat. When you run into a highly negative individual, you must maintain a sense of compassion and balance without getting sucked into their negativity. If boundaries are not set up correctly, these people can negatively impact everyone around them. However, keep in mind that when we try to change someone, they usually tend to resent us. More often than not, they dig their heels in and get worse.

NEGATIVE
PEOPLE

don’t want

POSITIVE RESULTS.

Ways to deal with
negative people:

RESIST THE URGE TO CRITICIZE THEM. Try to stay open-minded. If you label them as ‘difficult’, it may affect your
interactions with them and your ability to help them with their problems.

BE CAUTIOUS. Try to offer some compassion, but be careful not to give too much compassion too quickly.

Don’t reward them for their negativity.

TRY TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PERSON VALUES.

Use the power of knowledge and active listening. Having information on what an angry person values may allow you

to be able to use this information to control the situation better.

STICK WITH THE FACTS. Don’t react emotionally once you have identified that a person is negative.

If you are in customer service, stick with the policy or service contract. Always acknowledge any misunderstandings and

move toward solutions as fast as possible.

MAINTAIN A POSITIVE SAFETY ZONE. Imagine a ten-foot circle around yourself. Now, if a negative person enters,

the positivity alarm goes off. Remember you can only control your space, and your space only. Try to get them to see

the benefits of staying positive. If they enter the zone too forcefully, then there is a good

possibility that you may need to walk away.
